My new box has audio on the motherboard. It also has an integrated graphics controller ON THE CPU which includes an HDMI interface. Sound has never worked on this box, which wasn't a big problem cause I mostly use it for work, but it would be nice to hear the audio when I watch starcraft 2 on youtube. First magic is to use the aplay -l command to list the sound cards: andrew at linus:~$ aplay -l??????? **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 So ALSA detects two sound cards. The first one is the HDMI audio on the APU, the second is the audio on the motherboard. I plug my headphones into the motherboard analog output, which according to this aplay output is card 1 device #0. Just for an experiment, I know mplayer can do anything. Reading through the man page, I learn that I can force mplayer to use a specific audio output driver using this command: andrew at linus:~andrew at linus:~/Downloads/acoustic$ mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1.0 "Eric Clapton - Layla (Acoustic).mp3" and it works! Only thing left is to set card 1 device 0 as the default by adding this to ~/.asoundrc pcm.!default { type hw card 1 device 0 } defaults.ctl.card 1 defaults.pcm.card 1 defaults.timer.card 1 and restart alsa /etc/init.d/alsa restart later, andrew.
